Like so many things in this complicated life we tend to take flushing toilets totally for granted until something goes wrong and suddenly you can't use your toilet because it is blocked. S.M. Things you might try to unblock toilets before calling us.

First you must stop flushing the toilet. If you must put water in the bowl use a bucket to ensure the toilet does not overflow and flood your bathroom. Look to see if there is a stop-cock close to the toilet which will cut off the water supply and if there is turn it off.

Look to see if you can identify what is causing the problem and if you can, put your hand in a bin liner and use that to retrieve the offending item.

If you have a plunger use that in the bowl starting gently and gradually building the more violent agitation.

If the blockage appears to have cleared, try pouring water down it using the bucket.  Once you are sure the blockage has gone you can turn on the stop-cock again.

If you have done all this and the blockage still remains then you need a professional.

The lighter side of blocked toilets.

A doctor called his local plumber late one Friday night and explained that his toilet was blocked and about to overflow and asked how quickly the plumber could attend to the problem.

The plumber explained that it was Friday night and that he was out having a couple of beers with his friends but that he would make sure he visited the doctor as his first call on Monday morning.

The doctor was far from pleased at this seemingly casual attitude and pointed out that if the plumber was sick and it was an emergency the doctor would not wait until Monday before attending to him.  This was obviously the right approach because the plumber relented and said he would be at the doctor's home inside an hour.

Sure enough the plumber arrived on time and was taken to the offending toilet. Looking at the problem with a serious brow the plumber began to tap gently with a small rubber hammer all round the bowl before grunting with some satisfaction and opening his tool bag.

Throwing a couple of Asprin and an Alka Seltzer in the bowl the plumber looked at the doctor and said "That should clear the problem but if this toilet is still blocked on Monday morning, call me."
